SEO (search engine optimization) is the work you do on a website so search engines understand your content and people can find your pages and decide whether to click. That is how Google itself defines SEO in its SEO Starter Guide.<\/p>\n

What is SEO?<\/h2>\n

SEO targets organic results, the unpaid part of the results page. Google states plainly that it does not accept payment to crawl a site more often or to rank it higher (Google Search Central, How Google Search works, accessed October 2026<\/a>).<\/p>\n

There is also no secret that puts a site in first place automatically. Google describes SEO as the next step after a site meets Search Essentials, the baseline for being eligible to appear (Google Search Central, SEO Starter Guide, accessed October 2026<\/a>).<\/p>\n

The 3 stages of Google Search<\/h2>\n

  1. Crawling:<\/strong> automated programs called crawlers download text, images and videos from pages found on the web.<\/li>\n
  2. Indexing:<\/strong> Google analyzes the content and stores it in the Google index, a large database.<\/li>\n
  3. Serving:<\/strong> when someone searches, Google returns information relevant to the query.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Not every page makes it through all 3 stages, and Google does not guarantee it will crawl, index or serve any page. To see where your pages stop, open Google Search Console<\/a>.<\/p>\n
