I tend to answer with another question: what is one install worth to your app? Until you have that number, a CPI of VND 5,000 or VND 20,000 says nothing about profit, and the max-CPI-from-LTV worksheet further down gets you there.

In user acquisition for apps, CPI (cost per install) is the average ad spend you pay for one install. Spend VND 30 million, measure 6,000 installs from your ads, and your CPI is VND 5,000. Don’t confuse it with CPI the consumer price index from the economic news.

What is CPI in app marketing?

CPI = Ad spend / Installs from ads

“Spend” covers only what you pay the ad channel. An “install” is a first app open recorded by a mobile measurement partner (MMP) such as AppsFlyer or Adjust, not a download on the App Store or Google Play. Someone who downloads the app but never opens it does not count yet.

Crediting each install to the right ad is called mobile attribution. On Android it is fairly accurate. On iOS, when a user declines tracking through ATT, the app cannot read the IDFA, and installs are reported through SKAdNetwork in aggregated form and with a delay. iOS CPI therefore always carries some error; how to read it is covered in our article on iOS app ad measurement.

CPI has two meanings. The first is a pricing model: you pay only when an install happens. Apple Ads Basic charges per install up to a maximum price you choose, while Apple Ads Advanced charges per tap (Apple Ads Help). The second is a reporting metric: Meta or Google charge per impression or per click, and the spend is then converted into a cost per install.

Apple states it plainly: Advanced is cost per tap, Basic is cost per install. Their example: $10,000 that brings in 5,000 installs gives an eCPI of $2 (AppsFlyer Glossary). The “cost per install” figure in Meta or Google is really eCPI. In reports, separate organic installs from blended CPI so they do not carry the paid channels.

CPA goes one step further. Google App campaigns let you choose Target CPI (installs), Target CPA (in-app actions) or Target ROAS (value). Google’s example: a budget of $100 a day with a Target CPI of $2 means you are aiming for about 50 installs a day (Google Ads Help).

Google’s original Target CPI example: a $100 daily budget at a $2 target cost per install aims for about 50 installs a day. Screenshot of the About bidding in App campaigns page, support.google.com, November 2026.

What makes CPI go up or down

On channels that charge per impression, CPI splits into two parts:

CPI = CPM / IPM

IPM (installs per mille) is the number of installs per 1,000 impressions. With a CPM of VND 50,000 and an IPM of 5, CPI is VND 10,000. Keep the CPM, push IPM up to 8, and CPI falls to VND 6,250. Each factor below works on one of those two parts.

Platform. iOS CPI is almost always higher than Android because iPhone users spend more in apps, so advertisers pay higher CPMs to reach them. In Vietnam, Android accounted for 66% of installs in 2025 and iOS for 33%, up from 22% in 2017 (AppsFlyer, November 2025).

Country. High-income markets have high CPMs. In Adjust’s 2025 gaming data, CPI in North America was $1.68, 3 times the global level of $0.56.

App category. Casual games have a broad player base, so IPM is high. Finance or B2B apps have a narrow audience and get fewer installs.

Seasonality. Around 11.11, 12.12 and before Tet (the Lunar New Year), e-commerce brands all pile in budget at the same time and CPMs rise. If you are preparing for sale season, see the week-by-week schedule in our 11.11 sale plan.

Creative. Creative drives most of IPM. For e-commerce apps, video ads are 14 times more likely to generate an install than banners (Liftoff Mobile Ad Creative Index, March 2024).

Optimization goal. A campaign optimized for installs finds the people most likely to install, who are often also the people most likely to drop the app. Optimize for sign-ups or purchases and CPI rises, but each install is worth more. Google also states plainly that the higher the Target ROAS, the narrower the audience and the harder the campaign is to scale.

Cost per install benchmarks by platform and region

The figures below are for reference only. The Adjust figures above are gaming CPI by region and do not break out Vietnam. A more reliable benchmark is your own CPI over the last 4 to 8 weeks, split by platform and channel.

Why a low CPI is not always good

Understanding what CPI is is easy; reading the number correctly is harder. Casual game CPI on Android is only 1/10 of iOS, yet day-30 ROAS reached 47% on iOS and 15% on Android (Liftoff, April 2025). Installs 10 times cheaper, ROAS 3 times lower.

A hypothetical example: channel A has a CPI of VND 8,000, and 5% of the people who install still open the app on day 7. Channel B has a CPI of VND 20,000, and 20% still open the app on day 7. The cost per user still active on day 7 is VND 160,000 for channel A and VND 100,000 for channel B. The channel that is 2.5 times cheaper on CPI is 60% more expensive per retained user. CPI always needs to sit next to retention rate and post-install revenue.

Install fraud makes CPI look artificially cheap

Install fraud means fake installs or installs credited to the wrong source, and you still pay for them. According to AppsFlyer, the install fraud rate in Vietnam fell from 29% (Q1 2025) to 20% (Q1 2026), still above the global average. On Android, the baseline is 10% for shopping apps and 31% for finance apps (AppsFlyer State of Fraud for Marketers 2026, April 2026). Finance apps in Vietnam in 2025 had a fraud rate of 43% on Android and 27% on iOS (AppsFlyer, November 2025).

The report’s first finding: 52% of fraudulent installs flow through organic traffic, so your own benchmark may already be inflated. Common techniques are click flooding (firing large numbers of fake clicks to steal credit for organic installs), SDK spoofing (faking install signals from a server) and phone farms. Warning signs to check:

CTIT (click-to-install time, the time from click to first app open) bunched under 10 seconds, or spread unusually far beyond 24 hours.

Lots of installs but almost zero post-install events.

Day-1 retention far below other sources on the same platform.

Organic installs spiking right when a new paid source is switched on.

How to calculate maximum allowable CPI from LTV

The right question is not “what is a good CPI” but “how much is one install worth”. The answer comes from LTV, calculated on gross profit, not revenue.

Maximum CPI = Gross profit LTV per install × (1 – target profit margin) × (1 – invalid install rate)

A hypothetical example, e-commerce app, 180-day window, Android only:

Row

Calculation

Hypothetical example

A. Applying the LTV of loyal customers to every install sets the ceiling far too high.

To make it easier to track, convert it to ROAS: 96,000 / 16,800 = 5.7, so 180-day revenue ROAS needs to be about 571%.

A new app without enough data can take 30-day revenue and multiply it by a factor drawn from older cohorts. Our app marketing strategy article has another example of a CPI ceiling based on 90-day revenue.

Build separate tables for iOS and Android, because LTV differs between them. This is ASO work. For an app about to launch, go through our checklist for launching an app on the App Store.

Produce creative in batches and read IPM together with day-7 retention. Test 3 to 5 ideas each week and keep the ones with high IPM and retention no lower than average. High IPM with low retention usually means the creative promises something the app does not deliver. For Meta ads, creative variety is the main way the system finds new audiences.

Switch the goal from installs to actions once you have enough data. Start with Target CPI, then move to Target CPA for sign-ups or first orders. Google recommends using the ROAS a Target CPA campaign has already achieved as the starting Target ROAS.

Split campaigns by platform and country. Put iOS and Android under one goal and the algorithm will push money toward the cheaper side. Average CPI looks better while revenue stays flat.

Do not pay for rejected installs. With ad networks and affiliates paid on CPI, write into the contract that installs the MMP flags as fraud are not billable. In Q1 2026, the fraud rate among affiliates was 36 times higher than among self-reporting networks such as Meta and Google (AppsFlyer, June 2026).

Use deep links to take new users to the right content. Deferred deep linking sends someone who tapped an ad for a product straight to that product on the first open, and the algorithm gets more post-install events to learn from.

Cut channels based on cost per retained user. Each week, rank sources by CPI divided by day-7 retention, not by CPI. Any source that exceeds the ceiling in the table two weeks in a row gets its budget reduced.

Don’t

Compare your CPI with an unsourced “average CPI in Vietnam” figure found online.

Report a single CPI figure that combines iOS and Android.

Pour money into an unusually cheap source before looking at post-install data. The wrong move: “Source X is only VND 2,000 per install, 1/5 the cost of Meta, so move the whole budget there.”

If you need a CPI ceiling table built from LTV or a review of install source quality, Adtek’s App User Acquisition team can work on it with you. Contact Adtek to talk it through.

CPI is the average ad spend per app install.
