Video views objective
The video views objective is a campaign setup that tells the platform to show your video ad to the people most likely to watch it for longest, usually with the option to pay per view that passes a threshold instead of per impression. Each platform defines “a view” differently, anywhere from 2 seconds to 30 seconds.
What is the video views objective on Meta, Google and TikTok?
Meta no longer has a separate Video views objective. You choose Awareness with the performance goal ThruPlay or 2-second continuous video views, or you choose Engagement with the conversion location On your ad and the engagement type Video views (Meta Business Help Center, How to choose the right ad objective, accessed October 2026). ThruPlay now comes in two levels, 6 seconds and 15 seconds, or 97% of the video if it is shorter than that. The 15-second ThruPlay lets you pay by CPM or by ThruPlay, while the 6-second level is CPM only (Meta, About ThruPlay, accessed October 2026).
Google Ads: choose YouTube reach, views, and engagements, a Video campaign, the Video views subtype and target CPV bidding. In October 2025, the “Views” metric was renamed “TrueView views”. Billing did not change (Google Ads Help, Create a Video campaign, accessed October 2026).
TikTok places Video views in its Consideration group (TikTok, How to choose the right objective, April 2025). The objective optimizes for focused views, with three options: 6 seconds, 15 seconds, and 15 seconds with Optimize video completion turned on for videos 16 to 60 seconds long. You pay per focused view, and frequency is locked at 7 times every 7 days (TikTok, About the video views objective, August 2026).
How is a view counted?
| Platform | What counts as one view |
|---|---|
| Meta ThruPlay | 6 seconds or 15 seconds, or 97% of the video if it is shorter |
| Google, skippable in-stream | 30 seconds, or the full video if it is shorter, or a click on the ad |
| Google, in-feed | A click on the thumbnail, or 10 seconds of autoplay |
| Google, Shorts | 10 seconds or the full video, or a click on the CTA, a like, a comment or a share |
| TikTok focused view | 6 seconds or 15 seconds, or a positive interaction within that time (excluding the first second) |
Bumper and non-skippable ads on YouTube do not generate TrueView views. The “viewed a video” remarketing list also excludes people reached through bumpers, non-skippable ads and in-stream ads under 11 seconds (Google Ads Help, About YouTube ads and view metrics, accessed October 2026). If you plan on retargeting video viewers, pick a format that produces views.
Paid views vs public view counts
The view count under a YouTube video includes both organic views and ad plays that have only just started. Google does not bill based on that number. On Meta, an impression is counted when the ad appears on screen, before the video even needs to play (Meta, Impressions, accessed October 2026). To find out how many people actually stopped to watch, use hook rate.
Hypothetical example
A yogurt brand has a 20-second video, a YouTube budget of VND 20 million and a target CPV of VND 400. The expected result is about 50,000 TrueView views. Because the video is shorter than 30 seconds, each paid view in the skippable in-stream format means the viewer either watched to the end or clicked.
If the same video runs on TikTok, TikTok’s own guidance says videos of 16 to 60 seconds suit the 15-second focused view with Optimize video completion turned on. Cost per view may be higher than with the standard 15-second option, but more people watch to the end.
Frequently asked questions
When should you avoid the video views objective?
When what you need is orders or leads. The system will look for people who like watching videos, not people who are ready to buy.
Are cheap views a good sign?
Not necessarily. Look at completion rate and branded search volume too. If cost per view keeps creeping up while frequency rises, that may be a sign of creative fatigue.
