CTA (Call to Action)

November 01, 2026

A CTA (call to action) is the wording or button that tells people exactly what to do next, such as “Shop now”, “Book a consultation” or “Send message”. In advertising, the CTA connects the ad to the specific action you want to measure.

CTA meaning

In general English, a call to action is a speech, piece of writing or act that encourages people to take action (Cambridge Dictionary, call to action, accessed November 2026). In marketing, a CTA shows up in 3 places: the button on an ad, the closing line of ad copy, and the button or form on a landing page.

CTAs on Meta

Meta Ads Manager lets you pick a CTA button from a set list, such as See details, Learn more, Contact us and Shop now. The button leads to a destination on or off Facebook, like your website or a Messenger conversation. Meta advises choosing a button that matches the campaign objective: for example, an online store running a Traffic campaign to its website would use Shop now (Meta Business Help Center, About call-to-action buttons in Ads Manager, accessed November 2026).

The available buttons differ by objective and conversion location. For example, Get quote, Sign up and Apply now are available under the Leads objective with a website or instant form; under the Engagement objective, Send WhatsApp message is only available with WhatsApp (Meta Business Help Center, Available call-to-action buttons in Ads Manager, accessed November 2026).

CTAs in Google ads

Search ads have no button, so the CTA lives in the headlines and descriptions. Google Ads recommends a strong, clear CTA: the more specific it is and the closer it matches your keywords and landing page, the better your chances of a conversion. The landing page should mirror the CTA: if the ad invites people to sign up for a free tour, feature a sign-up form prominently on the page (Google Ads Help, Optimize your ads and landing pages, accessed November 2026).

Google also notes that generic CTAs like “call us today” or “sign up today” create a false sense of urgency with no benefit to the user. If you want urgency, give a real reason, such as a countdown saying “sale ends in XX hours” (Google Ads Help, Write compelling, genuine ad copy, accessed November 2026).

How to write a CTA

Formula: [Verb] + [What the customer gets] + [Condition or deadline, if it is real].

  • “Get a quote within 2 hours”
  • “Book a show home visit this weekend”
  • “Download the break-even ROAS sheet”

Avoid:

  • “Click here” or “See more” when people do not know what they get.
  • An ad that says “Get a quote” leading to a page that demands account sign-up.
  • “Today only” on an offer that runs all month. People notice and stop believing you.
  • Three equal buttons on one screen: Buy now, Call now, Chat now.

A CTA only persuades when the reason before it is strong enough. That reason is usually the product’s USP.

Example: change the CTA, change the cost per lead (hypothetical)

A furniture company runs 2 landing page versions, each getting 1,000 clicks for VND 6 million. Version A uses a “Learn more” button, converts at 3% and brings 30 leads at VND 200,000 each. Version B uses “Get a quote within 2 hours”, converts at 5% and brings 50 leads at VND 120,000 each. Same budget, 40% cheaper per lead with version B.

On the ad, the CTA affects CTR; on the landing page, it affects conversion rate. Test one place at a time so you know which change worked.

Frequently asked questions

How many CTAs should a page have?

One main action. The button can repeat at the top, middle and bottom of a long page, but it should be the same action.

Where can I see competitors’ CTAs?
