Noindex
Noindex is a rule set in a robots meta tag or an X-Robots-Tag HTTP header that tells Google not to show a page in search results. The page still loads normally; it just does not appear in Google Search or AI Overviews.
How the noindex tag works
There are two ways to set noindex, and they have the same effect (Google Search Central, Block Search indexing with noindex, accessed November 2026):
<meta name="robots" content="noindex">
X-Robots-Tag: noindex
The meta tag goes in <head>; change name="robots" to name="googlebot" to apply the rule to Google only. X-Robots-Tag is a header the server sends, so it also works for PDFs and images. Googlebot has to recrawl the page to see a change, and for less important pages Google says that can take months.
Nosnippet, max-snippet and AI Overviews
The AI Search Checker also flags pages that carry nosnippet. From Google’s robots meta tag documentation (Google Search Central, Robots meta tag specifications, accessed November 2026):
nosnippet: do not show a text snippet or video preview. It also prevents the content from being used as a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode.max-snippet:[number]: caps the snippet length in characters.max-snippet:0equals nosnippet, andmax-snippet:-1lets Google choose.data-nosnippet: an HTML attribute that keeps one section out of snippets while the rest of the page stays usable.
Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews and AI Mode (Google Search Central, AI features and your website, accessed November 2026). Noindex fails the first condition and nosnippet fails the second. To hide one passage, such as wholesale prices, put data-nosnippet on that passage instead of nosnippet on the whole page.
Blocking in robots.txt hides your noindex from Google
A common mistake is blocking a page in robots.txt and adding noindex at the same time. Googlebot cannot crawl the page, so it never sees the noindex, and the page can still appear in results if other sites link to it. Google also does not support noindex inside robots.txt. To get a page out of results, allow crawling so Google can read the noindex.
Where accidental noindex comes from
- WordPress setting: the “Discourage search engines from indexing this site” box under Settings, Reading. Since WordPress 5.3, checking it prints
<meta name='robots' content='noindex, nofollow' />on every page (WordPress.org, Settings Reading Screen, accessed November 2026). - Staging copied to production: test sites are usually noindexed site-wide, and the rule travels with the database or config.
- SEO plugins: Yoast and Rank Math let you noindex a single post or a whole content type, such as all Pages.
How to fix a noindex or nosnippet warning
Adtek’s AI Search Checker reads the robots and googlebot meta tags in the HTML and the X-Robots-Tag header (3 points). The check fails when it finds noindex, nosnippet, none or max-snippet:0 for all bots or for Googlebot.
- WordPress: go to Settings, Reading, uncheck Discourage search engines from indexing this site and click Save Changes.
- Yoast SEO: open the post, go to the Advanced tab and set the option that allows search engines to show the content to Yes. Also check Yoast SEO, Settings, Content types: content types you want shown must be switched on (Yoast, How to noindex URLs, accessed November 2026).
- Rank Math: enable Advanced Mode, open the post’s Advanced tab and clear No Index and No Snippet under Robots Meta. Also check Rank Math SEO, Titles & Meta so no content type is set to No Index (Rank Math, How to noindex URLs, accessed November 2026).
- Shopify: Shopify hides pages with a noindex snippet in theme.liquid or the seo.hidden metafield (Shopify Help Center, Hide a page from search engines, accessed November 2026). If a page is hidden by mistake, go to Online Store, Edit code, search theme.liquid for “noindex”, and clear the page’s SEO Hidden metafield.
- Custom code: search the <head> template for noindex and nosnippet, and check server config (Nginx, Apache, middleware) that might add X-Robots-Tag.
Check the header with this command; no output means there is no X-Robots-Tag:
curl -sI https://example.com/trang/ | grep -i x-robots-tag
View the page source (Ctrl+U) and search for “noindex” and “nosnippet”. In Google Search Console, URL Inspection has an “Indexing allowed?” line; click Test live URL to see what Google fetches now (Search Console Help, URL Inspection tool, accessed November 2026). That line always says Yes if robots.txt blocks crawling, because Google cannot read the noindex. Then run the AI Search Checker again.
Frequently asked questions
Should I noindex duplicate pages?
Google does not recommend noindex for choosing the main version within one site, because noindex blocks the page from Search entirely. Use a canonical tag instead.
How long until a page returns after I remove noindex?
You have to wait for Googlebot to recrawl. For important pages, use Request Indexing in URL Inspection to ask for an earlier crawl; the feature has a quota.
If you need an indexing review across your site, see Adtek’s SEO solution.
