Performance Max
Performance Max (PMax) is a goal-based Google Ads campaign type built around conversions that lets one campaign run across all of Google’s ad inventory: Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps. The advertiser sets the goal and supplies images, videos and headlines, and Google AI decides where to show the ads, to whom and at what bid.
What is Performance Max?
Search, YouTube and Display each used to need their own campaign; PMax combines them into one. According to Google, PMax fits when a business has a specific conversion goal such as online sales or leads, wants to use all of Google’s channels in one campaign, and wants more conversions than keyword-based Search campaigns can reach (Google Ads Help, About Performance Max campaigns, accessed October 2026).
PMax works with the Sales, Leads, Website traffic and Store visits objectives. App promotion is not on that list, so app install ads still run through App campaigns.
How does PMax work?
- Conversion goals: choose the action to optimize for, and optionally set a tROAS or tCPA. Smart Bidding sets bids based on the likelihood of conversion in each auction.
- Asset groups: sets of headlines, descriptions, images, logos and videos around one theme. Google assembles them into ads for each placement.
- Audience signals: customer lists and interest groups that help the system learn faster at the start. They are hints, not targeting limits.
- Controls: search themes, negative keywords, brand exclusions and channel priorities. Search, YouTube, Maps, Gmail and Discover are grouped as “Google channels,” while Search partners and the Display Network can each get their own priority.
Why is PMax getting so much attention in 2025 and 2026?
In April 2025, Google said more than one million advertisers were using PMax and announced channel performance reporting, full search terms reports and detailed metrics for each asset (Google Ads & Commerce Blog, April 2025). PMax is often called a “black box” because it is hard to see where the money goes. Channel reporting answers part of that question.
PMax also supports customer lifecycle goals. With “New Customer Only,” the campaign bids only for new customers; with “New Customer Value,” it bids higher for new customers than for existing ones (Google Ads Help, About customer lifecycle goals, accessed October 2026). Businesses that track CAC should look closely at this setting.
Risks of running PMax for leads
PMax optimizes for exactly the signal you give it. If the conversion is “form submitted,” the system will find the people most likely to submit a form, and they are not necessarily buyers. For real estate, education and finance in Vietnam, the safer approach is to send CRM outcomes back to Google, such as qualified leads, booked appointments and signed contracts (see Google Ads Help, About enhanced conversions, accessed October 2026), using first-party data collected with customer consent.
Example in Vietnam (hypothetical)
A condominium developer runs PMax with form submissions as the goal. CPL comes in 40% cheaper than Search, but the sales team manages to reach very few of the people. The developer switches the goal to “qualified lead” imported from its CRM and accepts a higher CPL to get more appointments to view the apartments. Channel reporting shows most of the budget going to Display, so the team adds videos for YouTube.
Frequently asked questions
Can PMax replace Search campaigns?
Google positions PMax as a complement to keyword-based Search. When a query matches an exact match keyword in a Search campaign, the Search campaign takes priority over PMax. You can keep exact match for your core keywords and let PMax expand from there.
How do you know PMax is really bringing in more customers?
The conversions PMax reports can include people who would have bought anyway. To measure the true lift, you need an incrementality test with a control group.
