Reach objective
The reach objective is a campaign optimization choice that shows your ads to as many different people in the target audience as possible on a given budget. The system optimizes for the number of people (strictly speaking, the number of accounts), not for clicks or orders.
What is the reach objective on Meta, TikTok and Google?
Only TikTok still keeps Reach as a standalone campaign objective. Meta and Google have folded it into a broader objective.
| Platform | Where to select it | Billing |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Awareness objective, performance goal set to Reach | CPM |
| TikTok | Awareness category, Reach objective | CPM |
| Google Ads | YouTube reach, views, and engagements objective, Video campaign, Video reach subtype | Target CPM |
Meta merged four old objectives, Brand awareness, Reach, Video views and Store traffic, into Awareness. To rebuild an old-style Reach campaign, choose Awareness and set the performance goal to Reach or Impressions (Meta Business Help Center, How to choose the right ad objective, accessed October 2026).
TikTok puts Reach in the Awareness category and lets you buy it through an auction (Auction) or a reservation (Reach & Frequency), priced on CPM (TikTok Business Help Center, About the reach objective, January 2026). The reservation option is currently open only to eligible advertisers (TikTok, Advanced Ads Delivery for Reach & Frequency, January 2026).
Google splits Video reach into three options: Efficient reach (bumper, skippable in-stream, in-feed, Shorts), Non-skippable reach (15-second ads, or 30-second ads mainly on TV screens) and Target frequency (repeat exposure to the same people per week or per month) (Google Ads Help, Video reach campaigns, accessed October 2026).
Optimizing for Reach vs. Impressions
When you choose Reach, the system prioritizes people who have not seen the ad yet. When you choose Impressions, it buys the cheapest impressions available, even if that means showing the ad again and again to the same group. With Meta’s Reservation buying type, the Impressions optimization is no longer available, only Reach (Meta, About the awareness objective, accessed October 2026).
So don’t judge a Reach campaign by CPM. The right metric is the cost to reach 1,000 people, which Meta calls Cost per 1,000 Meta Accounts reached. Reach on Meta is an estimate based on sampled data (Meta, About Reach Metrics, accessed October 2026). How to read reach together with frequency is covered in the reach and frequency entry.
Auction or reservation?
Reservation works when you need to know price and coverage in advance. Meta’s Reservation is for audiences of more than 200,000 people, lets you book up to six months ahead at a fixed CPM, and since October 2024 lets you pause and edit targeting after publishing (which then requires a new quote) (Meta, About Reservation, accessed October 2026). With a small budget or a small audience, auction gives you more flexibility.
Example (hypothetical)
A pharmacy chain in Can Tho, a city in the Mekong Delta, spends VND 30 million over 2 weeks on two identical ad sets that differ only in their optimization goal:
- Optimized for Reach: 1.2 million impressions, 380,000 people. CPM of VND 25,000, a cost per 1,000 people reached of about VND 79,000, frequency of 3.2.
- Optimized for Impressions: 1.5 million impressions, 210,000 people. CPM of VND 20,000, a cost per 1,000 people reached of about VND 143,000, frequency of 7.1.
The second ad set has the cheaper CPM but reaches far fewer people. If the goal is to announce a store opening, the first ad set is doing the right job.
Reach objective vs. brand awareness objective
Awareness is the broad objective. Reach is just one optimization inside it, along with Impressions, Ad recall lift and ThruPlay. If you need people to remember the brand more than you need lots of people to see it, see brand awareness objective.
FAQ
Can I use the reach objective for a small audience?
Yes, for example to remind past customers about a sale. The smaller the audience, the faster frequency climbs, so set a frequency cap.
Why is reach larger than the audience’s population?
Platforms count accounts, not people. Someone with two accounts is counted twice.
