Breadcrumb navigation

Breadcrumb navigation is the short row of links, usually above a page title, that shows where the current page sits in a website’s structure, for example: Home > Shoes > Running shoes. For SEO, a breadcrumb works on two levels: a navigation trail for readers and BreadcrumbList structured data for Google.

What is breadcrumb navigation: one part for people, one for machines

The part readers see is the chain of links. Clicking “Shoes” takes them back to the category page without hitting Back several times. Google describes a breadcrumb trail as showing the page’s position in the site hierarchy, letting users navigate up one level at a time (Google Search Central, Breadcrumb structured data, accessed November 2026).

The machine part is BreadcrumbList, a type of schema markup that declares the same trail in JSON-LD. Google uses it to categorize the page’s information in search results. The two parts are independent: a site can have the schema without a visible trail, and the reverse. Adtek’s AI Search checker only scores the schema part.

What goes into BreadcrumbList

  • itemListElement: the list of levels, with at least 2 ListItem entries.
  • position: the order, starting at 1 for the top level (Schema.org, BreadcrumbList, accessed November 2026).
  • name: the label shown for that level.
  • item: the URL of that level. The last level (the current page) can skip item; Google then uses the page’s own URL.

Example for a product page in a shoe shop:

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "BreadcrumbList",
  "itemListElement": [
    {
      "@type": "ListItem",
      "position": 1,
      "name": "Giày",
      "item": "https://www.example.com/giay/"
    },
    {
      "@type": "ListItem",
      "position": 2,
      "name": "Giày chạy bộ",
      "item": "https://www.example.com/giay/chay-bo/"
    },
    {
      "@type": "ListItem",
      "position": 3,
      "name": "Giày chạy bộ nam ABC"
    }
  ]
}
</script>

Google does not require a ListItem for the home page, and it recommends breadcrumbs that follow a typical user path to the page rather than mirroring the URL structure (same Breadcrumb structured data source).

Where breadcrumbs show on Google and in AI search

Since January 2025, Google no longer shows breadcrumbs in mobile search results, only the domain, because the trail gets truncated on small screens. Desktop results still show breadcrumbs, and Google still supports BreadcrumbList (Google Search Central Blog, Simplifying breadcrumbs, accessed November 2026). Having the schema does not guarantee Google will display a breadcrumb.

For AI search, Google says you do not need any special markup to appear in its generative AI features (Google Search Central, AI optimization guide, accessed November 2026). In my view BreadcrumbList is worth it because it is cheap: a plugin turns it on once for every page, and machines can see which category a product belongs to. That is my inference; no AI company has said it uses breadcrumbs to choose which sources to cite.

How to enable breadcrumbs when the tool reports no BreadcrumbList

  1. WordPress with Yoast SEO: Yoast adds BreadcrumbList to the schema of every public page that has a WebPage (Yoast Developer, Breadcrumb schema piece, accessed November 2026). If the tool still reports it missing, check whether your theme or another plugin turns off Yoast’s schema. To show the trail to readers, go to Yoast SEO, Settings, Advanced, Breadcrumbs, turn on “Enable breadcrumbs for your theme”, then add the Yoast Breadcrumbs block, the Home » Glossary » Breadcrumb navigation shortcode or the yoast_breadcrumb() function to your theme (Yoast, Implement breadcrumbs, accessed November 2026).
  2. WordPress with Rank Math: enable the Schema module, go to Rank Math SEO, General Settings, Breadcrumbs (Advanced Mode required) and turn breadcrumbs on. Display them with the [rank_math_breadcrumb] shortcode or the rank_math_the_breadcrumbs() function; themes that declare Rank Math support show them automatically. WooCommerce shops should turn off WooCommerce’s default breadcrumbs to use Rank Math’s version with schema (Rank Math, Breadcrumbs, accessed November 2026).
  3. Shopify: the Dawn theme has no BreadcrumbList. Add the JSON-LD to your product and collection templates, or use a schema app.
  4. Custom code, Haravan, Sapo: have each page template generate a JSON-LD block like the example above from its category data. The text in name should match the visible trail.

After the fix, view the page source (Ctrl+U) and search for BreadcrumbList, paste the URL into the Rich Results Test, accessed November 2026 to confirm a Breadcrumbs item with no errors, then rerun the AI Search checker. Errors across many pages show up in the rich result reports in Google Search Console.

Frequently asked questions

Do breadcrumbs help rankings?

Google does not call breadcrumbs a ranking factor. They help readers move around the site and help Google understand which group a page belongs to; rankings still depend on content and other SEO factors.

Does a small site need breadcrumbs?

If the site is just a home page and a few subpages, a visible trail does not help readers much. The schema comes free with your SEO plugin, so leave it on. Shops and blogs with multi-level categories should have both parts.
