Brand message

October 20, 2026

A brand message is the core idea a business wants customers to understand and remember about it, together with the reasons to believe it. A tagline is one short line next to the logo; the brand message is the substance behind that line, said again in different ways on the website, in ads and during sales conversations.

What goes into a brand message?

A brand message you can actually use usually has three layers, often drawn as a “message house”:

Layer What it contains Example (hypothetical, water purifier)
Core message One sentence: what it delivers, and for whom Clean drinking water for the whole family, without having to remember when to change the filter
Message pillars Two to four points that hold up the core message Filter lasts 12 months; installed within 24 hours; in-home warranty
Proof Things that can be verified Water test report, written return policy

The bottom layer is the one most often skipped, and it is also the layer that carries legal risk (see below).

Brand message vs. tagline, positioning and campaign message

  • A tagline is the short version, meant to stick after one hearing. The brand message is the full version, so staff, agencies and partners all speak with one voice.
  • Positioning is an internal document about frame of reference and point of difference, and it sits inside brand strategy. The brand message is how that positioning gets said to customers.
  • A campaign message lives for a few weeks. It should fit inside one pillar instead of opening a new idea.

A brand message is also different from brand identity: identity decides how the brand looks and sounds, while the brand message decides what it says. The brand itself is what customers actually keep in their heads after hearing from you and dealing with you.

Brand message in advertising

Google’s ABCD guidelines for YouTube ads, built with Ipsos and reviewed by Nielsen and Kantar, have two points that apply directly. B (Branding) recommends bringing the brand in early, often and through several senses: product shots, packaging, voiceover, music. C (Connection) warns against cramming too much into one ad and says to keep the message focused. Google reports that ads following ABCD see on average a 30% lift in short-term sales likelihood and a 17% lift in long-term brand contribution (Think with Google, Understanding the ABCDs of effective creative on YouTube, April 2022, based on Google/Kantar data from 2021).

In practice, each ad carries one pillar and the core message repeats in every ad. If five ads say five different things, customers remember very little.

Legal note for Vietnam from 2026

Law No. 75/2025/QH15, which amends Vietnam’s Law on Advertising and takes effect on January 1, 2026, requires ad content to be truthful, accurate and clear, and not misleading about features, quality or uses (Article 19, Clause 1). The law also bans ads that compare a product with similar products from other companies without lawful documents to prove the claim (Article 8, Clause 10) (Official Gazette of Vietnam, Law No. 75/2025/QH15, June 2025). A pillar like “lasts longer than Brand X” needs paperwork behind it before it goes into an ad.

How to write a brand message

  1. Start from the positioning you have already agreed on, not from wording or ad ideas.
  2. Write the core message in one sentence. Read it to a few real customers, then ask them a day later what they remember.
  3. Tie each pillar to at least one piece of proof.
  4. Rewrite it for each customer group. Homeowners, renters and dealers need to hear the same idea in three different ways.
  5. Have your sales advisors read it aloud. Fix any sentence they cannot say naturally in their own words.

Frequently asked questions

How often should you change your brand message?

Keep the core message for years. Update the pillars and proof when the product or the market changes.

Does a small business need a message house?

Yes, but one A4 page is enough. What matters is that everyone in the company works from that same page.
