Brand Extension

October 20, 2026

Brand extension is the use of an existing brand name to launch a product in a category different from the brand’s original one. A motorcycle maker selling cars under its own name is a typical case.

What is brand extension?

Adding flavors, sizes or versions within the same category is a line extension. A brand extension moves into a new category, where customers have never bought that brand name before.

The upside is that customers already know the name, so the new product does not have to build awareness from scratch. The downside: if customers feel the new product does not fit, they may start to doubt the positioning of the original brand as well.

When do customers accept an extension?

The most widely cited model comes from David Aaker and Kevin Lane Keller in 1990 (Marketing Science Institute, Aaker and Keller, 1990). Under this model, customers judge an extension on:

  • The perceived quality of the parent brand.
  • The fit between the original category and the new one, for example shared technology, a shared customer base or a shared benefit.
  • The combined effect of those two factors.

In 2001, Bottomley and Holden reanalyzed the data from the original study along with seven replications in several countries. The results supported all three factors, but how much each one contributed varied by brand and by the culture of each country (Journal of Marketing Research, November 2001).

A separate 1990 study by Keller and Aaker found that high-quality brands can “stretch” further than average-quality brands, although both have limits. A successful earlier extension made customers more willing to accept a more distant one. In this experiment, evaluations of the parent brand were barely affected by a failed extension (Stanford Graduate School of Business, 1990). These are lab results, not a guarantee of what happens in a real market.

A real example: Honda in the 1960s

Honda built its business on motorcycles. In 1963 it launched the T360 mini truck, its first automobile, followed by the S500 sports car the same year. During that decade Honda also sold tillers, outboard boat engines, the E300 portable generator (1965) and the G20 and G30 general-purpose engines, all under the Honda name (Honda Global, The 1960s, accessed October 2026). The categories were very different but had one thing in common: the engine. This is fit built on a shared technical capability.

Check your trademark before extending

A trademark application has to list its goods and services according to WIPO’s Nice Classification. The current edition is NCL 13-2026, in force since January 1, 2026 (WIPO, Nice Classification, accessed October 2026). Before you take a brand name into a new category, check whether your existing registration covers that class, and whether someone has already registered a similar mark in it.

Hypothetical example

A facial cleanser brand launches a sunscreen. Same sales channels, same customers, same promise about skin, so the fit is high. If the same brand launched an energy drink, the fit would be low, and a separate name would make more sense.

Types of extension compared

Line extension Brand extension Co-branding
Category Stays the same New category Varies, usually a joint product
Name on the product One brand One brand Two brands
Main risk The new product eats into sales of the existing one Customers see a poor fit and the positioning gets blurred Dependence on the partner’s reputation

Frequently asked questions

How is brand extension different from rebranding?

Rebranding changes the name or identity of the brand itself. Brand extension keeps the name and takes it into a new category.

When should you use a new name instead of extending?

When the fit is low, when the new product targets a very different price segment, or when a failure in the new category could drag the safety or quality of the original product into dispute.
