6 TikTok ads tips for 2026: creative, Spark Ads and Smart+
Updated on October 19, 2026: Adtek rewrote the entire article with the latest data, platform features and regulations from 2025 to 2026.
TikTok ads tips for 2026 fit in one sentence: make the video look like TikTok content, say the main thing in the first 3 seconds, then give the automated system enough variations to choose from. The Creative best practices for performance ads guide from TikTok for Business (updated June 2025) spells out the benchmarks: shoot vertical 9:16, use a minimum resolution of 720p, include sound, introduce the core message within the first 3 seconds, place the hook within the first 6 seconds, keep on-screen text to 5 to 10 words per second, and run 3 to 5 clearly different creatives in each ad group.
This article is a rewrite of a 2021 piece based on AppsFlyer. Three big things have changed since then. First, TikTok in Vietnam has become a mass channel: TikTok’s own advertising tools show 76.1 million people aged 18 and over in its ad audience, according to DataReportal Digital 2026: Vietnam (published November 2025, with data from October 2025). Second, ad videos now sell directly inside the app: TikTok Shop reached $5.96 billion in GMV, up 83%, and took 44% of sales across the four largest marketplaces in the 12 months to April 2026, according to a Q&Me report summarized by The Investor (June 2026). Third, Smart+ and GMV Max have taken over most of the work of choosing audiences, budgets and placements. The thing advertisers still control most is the creative.
How well do the six tips from 2021 hold up?
| Tip in the 2021 article | In 2026 | What needs to change |
|---|---|---|
| Make vertical videos | Still true, now the minimum requirement | 9:16, 720p or higher, text and product inside the safe zone |
| Open with something striking | True, with more specific benchmarks | Core message within 3 seconds, hook within 6 seconds |
| Think like musical.ly, use trending songs | Needs fixing | Businesses use the Commercial Music Library, not the general music library |
| Keep it short, 10 to 25 seconds | Partly needs fixing | Keep the hook, benefit, CTA structure; length is a variable to test |
| Follow trends | True if the trend fits the product | A trend only helps when you can produce in time and the music is cleared for commercial use |
| User-generated content | Truer than before | Run it through Spark Ads; KOLs and KOCs must disclose ads under the new law |
6 TikTok ads tips for creative in 2026
1. Shoot vertical 9:16 and keep key information inside the safe zone
TikTok calls this the basics: sound, a vertical 9:16 frame, 720p or higher, and content placed inside the interface safe zone. The safe zone is the part of the screen not covered by the caption, the like button, the profile picture and the CTA button. The most common mistake when reusing videos from other channels is putting the price or the product name right at the bottom edge, exactly where the caption and CTA sit on top of it. Open the preview in Ads Manager on a phone before approving the ad. Don’t rely only on how it looks on a computer screen.
2. Say the main thing in 3 seconds, hold viewers to second 6
TikTok separates two benchmarks. Within the first 3 seconds, viewers need to know what the video is about, because this window is tied to recall and awareness. The hook should land within the first 6 seconds to extend watch time, using curiosity, surprise or a clear emotion. In practice: cut the opening logo sequence, put the product or the customer’s problem in the very first frame, and add a short line of text on screen. Each idea should have at least two different hooks. For example, one version opens with a question about the customer’s problem, and another opens with a shot of the product being used.
3. Sound: on by default, licensed without exception
The 2021 article recommended using songs that were popular in each market. In 2026, that advice can easily lead to a violation. According to TikTok’s Commercial Music Library page (updated July 2025), businesses may not use the general music library for commercial purposes, and that includes organic videos, duets and stitches. Instead, they get a library of roughly 1 million licensed tracks, free for business use. If you want to use someone else’s original sound, check with your legal team first.
Background music is only part of the picture. A real person speaking Vietnamese usually carries more information: the price, how to use the product, the reason to buy. Add subtitles for viewers who watch with the sound off.
4. Drop the seconds rule, keep the hook, benefit, CTA structure
TikTok’s creative guidance page does not set a fixed length. What it stresses is structure: a hook, a differentiated selling point and a clear call to action. Organic videos used for Spark Ads can run up to 10 minutes. The 10 to 25 second range in the old article was the original author’s own observation from 2021, so treat it as a starting point for testing, not a rule. For the same idea, make a short version that sells directly and a longer one that explains the product, then let the numbers decide.
5. Use trends when they fit the product
TikTok Creative Center offers rising hashtags, creative analysis and a library of reference ads. Symphony Assistant suggests ideas and drafts scripts. Before jumping on a trend, answer two questions. Does the trend let the product appear naturally? And can your team get a video live within a few days? If your content approval process takes two weeks, the trend has usually passed by the time the video goes out.
6. Real people, real angles, real proof
TikTok recommends putting creators, employees or customers in the video and choosing a self-shot, unpolished style. In Vietnam there is one more reason: trust. The same Q&Me report found that 67% of consumers want marketplaces to guarantee authentic goods, 53% want reviews they can trust, and dietary supplements fell 22% after a string of counterfeit cases in 2025. Sales videos should show proof people can see with their own eyes: anti-counterfeit stamps, unboxing without cuts, real users saying their name and their situation.
From January 1, 2026, Vietnam’s amended Law on Advertising No. 75/2025/QH15 (passed by the National Assembly in June 2025, summarized by LuatVietnam) requires influencers to check product documentation, not to promote products they have not used, and to state clearly that the content is an ad right before and during the promotion. Any brief sent to KOCs (key opinion consumers) should include these points.
Spark Ads: running ads with organic videos
According to the About Spark Ads page (updated June 2026), Spark Ads use organic posts from the brand’s account, or from a creator’s account once the creator grants an authorization code, as ads. Views, comments, shares, likes and follows earned while the ad runs all count toward the original post. Viewers can tap the account name, the music or the follow button just as they would on a normal video, so the ad is less likely to be recognized as an ad.
A few limits are worth knowing. Videos can be up to 10 minutes long. Each Ads Manager account can hold up to 10,000 Spark Ads. If you want to delete a video from the original account, you first have to revoke the authorization. The authorization code’s duration can be customized, so set it to the campaign length plus a buffer, and write it into the contract with the creator. The practical approach is to pick organic videos that already have a good completion rate and click-through rate (CTR), then spark them, instead of building new ads from scratch.
Smart+ and GMV Max: when the system picks creative for you
Smart+ is TikTok’s automation suite for the Traffic, Sales, Lead Generation and App Promotion objectives. The blog post How to build campaigns your way with Smart+ (May 2026) explains that advertisers can switch automation on or off for each component: audience, budget, catalog and placement. One campaign can hold several asset groups, each with its own destination URL and up to 50 creatives, along with reporting for each creative. TikTok says Smart+ Catalog Ads cut CPA by 29% compared with manual campaigns, but this is TikTok’s internal data from a global beta in 2025, so use it as a reference only. The About upgrades to Smart+ page (updated October 2026) notes that the upgraded version may not yet be available to every account.
For TikTok Shop sellers, GMV Max is a campaign type that chooses products, videos and placements on its own to maximize sales. According to TikTok’s Vietnamese-language guide (updated June 2026), Product GMV Max is already available in Vietnam. Sellers only set an ROI target, similar to ROAS, and a daily budget. Once you create GMV Max for a product, the VSA and PSA ads for that product switch off automatically across every ad account. If you are preparing for a sale season, the GMV Max launch timeline is part of Adtek’s 11.11 plan.
Both tools lead to the same result. Once the machine handles targeting, the quality and quantity of creative decide performance. That is why the most valuable TikTok ad tip right now is to always have a fresh batch of videos ready to feed in. Meta is moving the same way with its new ad retrieval system, which we analyzed in our article on Meta ads in 2026 and Andromeda.
TikTok Symphony: which parts should you hand to AI?
Symphony is TikTok for Business’s suite of generative AI tools. According to a TikTok blog post (June 2026), Symphony Creative Studio is now open to every logged-in TikTok for Business account. It creates videos from text, images or existing clips, offers digital avatars that read scripts in more than 30 languages, and translates and dubs videos. From August 3, 2026, Symphony also integrates ByteDance’s Dreamina Seedance 2.5 video model, which can generate videos up to 30 seconds long instead of the previous maximum of 15 seconds. It is rolling out gradually to some paying advertisers in some markets (TikTok, August 2026). Every video made in Creative Studio is automatically labeled “AI-generated”. Inside Smart+ there are also Recommended Creatives, which generate new assets, and Automatic Enhancements, which resize, upscale, translate and dub.
In our view, these tools work best for multiplying variations: changing the aspect ratio, trying a different hook, translating a video for another market. For cosmetics, dietary supplements or any product that needs to prove it works, don’t swap real users for AI avatars. The “AI-generated” label undercuts exactly what this kind of video needs, which is the sense that a real person stands behind the recommendation.
Adtek’s view: a checklist before you launch a TikTok campaign
The TikTok ads tips above come together as a list your ad team should check before every new round of creative:
- The video is vertical 9:16, 720p or higher, and a test view on a phone shows the price, product name and logo are not covered by the caption or CTA button.
- Watch the first 3 seconds with the sound off: can a viewer tell what the video is selling?
- The hook appears before second 6, and each idea has at least two hook versions.
- The music comes from the Commercial Music Library or has a written license.
- There are subtitles or on-screen text, around 5 to 10 words per second.
- Real people appear: a creator, an employee or a customer, along with proof viewers can see.
- KOL and KOC videos include an ad disclosure, and the product documentation has been sent to them.
- Each ad group has 3 to 5 creatives that differ clearly in their idea, not just in text color.
- The Spark Ads authorization code stays valid until the campaign ends.
- The next batch of creative is ready. When results keep declining, add new creatives to the ad group that is already running instead of creating a new ad group, as TikTok recommends.
On measurement, ROAS in Ads Manager only tells you how many orders TikTok takes credit for. If your TikTok budget is large enough, set aside a round of incrementality testing to see the sales that are truly added, before you decide whether to raise or cut the budget.
